Some excerpts: "...the whole series of these films is based on a 30s genre of a serial...the acting style is very much from the 30s... conceptually it's using the influence & the inspiration of the 30s films as its basis...the most central of which is the Saturday Matinee serials...them (Obi Wan and Jango) going over the side (of the building) and the cliffhanger part of it which is again that Saturday Matinee aspect of the whole thing. Taking that idea and twisting it making it new and fresh... little hommage to the Rock People in Flash Gordon when they come out of the rocks (obviously George means the Clay People from Flash Gordon's Trip To Mars)". Ben Burtt, film editor "It's been a tradition since the very 1st Star Wars film was released is to make scene transitions often using wipes - this was George's idea, the inspiration for these wipes comes from their use in the classic serials in the golden age of Hollywood". George also references hommages to 40s film noir mysteries and Ray Harryhausen.

Posts: 0 13-Nov-02 01:06	I haven't seen CLONES, but I do know this: if Lucas was emulating FLASH GORDON and BUCK ROGERS with his earlier STAR WARS pictures, by PHANTOM MENACE he was apparently trying to pay homage to THE CLUTCHING HAND and THE BLACK COIN....

Posts: 201 13-Nov-02 02:02	Bwahahahaha! Oops, forgive the outburst. I couldn't agree more! A year or so ago I was being punished for something and had to sit and endure that mess. Obi Wan and the other guy teaming up to fight Darth Maul, oh yeah-- that's heroism-- let's gang up on him! Hey, how about getting a kid to enter a life threatening race for us!! Yeah!!! The saddest part was that the kid was so annoying that I was glad they were putting the little bugger in danger. Sadly, he survived the movie thus ensuring a sequel. I haven't seen part II (Part 5?) yet, although previews of Yoda jumping around with his light saber almost had me sitting outside my local Blockbuster waiting for them to open (that's sarcasm folks). Part III (Part 6?) will apparently feature the annoying kid's transformance into Darth Vader, which has a slight chance of getting me to see it. The one thing I've learned is that the force is so powerful, it's able to make totally sane fans enjoy these horrible sequels. Don't get me wrong, I was a BIG fan of the first one (the real first one in '77) and saw it something like 20 times on the big screen. The second one left me gasping for more and the third one made me throw bologna sandwiches at the screen when the little bear creatures were able to beat Imperial Stormtroopers with sticks and rocks. So, Lucas is 2 for 4 with me. Andy

Hell, the opening crawls style of the Star Wars films is a direct steal from "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" (not to mention that the storm troopers have always reminded of Mings guards from the Serial). Shall we discuss the Indiana Jones Movies? The fact is that ALL of Georgie's successful movies are based on Serials. Influenced...Whimwham!! Airman First Class Posts: 620 18-Nov-02 04:26 Serial Fan	I think I remember reading this in another thread. But anyway as long as we're giving credit for the opening crawl it was first used by Universal in the Buck Rogers serial.
