I'm certainly looking forward to this one. I really like the cover design, but my favorite publicity still from this serial is this one:

Hi Doc~I'm sure You're doing your best with your MAGIC. I think the other squadron members would agree with me that you are an absolute magician with
the serial restorations that you've done. Only YOU know your limits. But I think that we can certainly offer advice. Don't go overboard with this,
but also don't worry about any time frame. We trust You're doing your best and we can also be very patient if required. Yes, do the best you can, but
don't burn out on it. How many times have you watched this so far? And will you be so sick & tired of it that you won't even enjoy the final
product? Don't let that happen! Finish it and look forward to the accolades you're sure to receive.

Thanks, Willie, but I just found out that it looks like I won't be able to "go overboard" with the audio restoration -- I just tried redoing the
audio for Ch. 2 to try and clean up the hiss on dialogue scenes a bit further by using a different technique -- and after completing this and comparing the
second version to the first version I had done, the result turned out exactly the same! So we will have to just go with what there is to go with. Which is not
that bad, just annoying to a perfectionist.
Re: burning out on it, I already did about a week ago (LOL) but that happens, gotta finish it anyway! Also re: Accolades, that's not why I do this stuff. I get attacked for whatever I do as much as I get thanked (though I am starting to realize that the more certain dyspeptic internet posters say they hate something I have put out, often, the better a thing must be), so I gave up on that sort of motive a long time ago, if I ever had it to begin with! This serial has badly needed help for ages; it's lost its place in cinema history because it has gone unrestored for so long after the attempt to deliberately destroy it. And yet though it's been unseen or seen only in awful quality and incomplete form for 70 years, it remains firmly in people's memories as something important. That says a lot for its quality and character and makes me feel as if I am not wasting time I put into its insanely complicated restoration. If you guys enjoy it and this makes it possible to be remembered in anything close to its proper place in time and space I will be happy. |

A slight improvement, such as going from a 13th generation VHS to an 11th, including the hiss, would be an improvement to me.
Several years ago I bought a 16mm print of chapter 2 from Thunderbird Films, and at the time, in my opinion, it was not that bad quality-wise, although it was kind of choppy and with titles redone, and of course with the ever present sub-titles. Then a few years later I obtained a VHS of the entire 15 chapters, this was horrible with an entire chapter dubbed from a French print, including the title and credits, and recently I got the MillCreek version, a slight improvement over the VHS, but still lousy. I am looking forward to this new version, like a kid all over, waiting for Santa Claus on Christmas. I hope it makes it before Christmas. |

Unlike some projects I announce early, Lightning, I announced this one when it was nearing completion; when the end was in sight. We are not at the beginning
of my working on this, we're close to the end. I am fussing with the little stuff now; there's a lot of it but it's all little stuff and moving
along fairly quickly. The cover is done and I am not going to put any extras on to slow the release time down. I am in the next to last phase, the last being
the compress-and-burn part, which will take a couple days since this is a 15 chapter serial but certainly not forever. I am considering this a first pass on
the serial; there may be an upgrade someday for content (in case something needs correction) or from better quality material or both but since I'm dealing
with "adequate" rather than sparkling raw material here I don't want to go overboard on it and waste time that could better be directed
elsewhere. Anyway, you will have it way before Xmas.

Maybe as an extra you could show some before and after scenes on how you restored picture and sound. Remember, you can always trust Honest Pa Stark |

I'm overjoyed at the news. Like most folks, all I've seen is the worst-possible condition vhs nightmares of all time. Seeing it spectacular condition
(comparatively speaking) will be wonderful. Congratulations on tracking it down and putting so much work into it. I must say, I really love this period of
Republic so much, and also the earlier ones like The Painted Stallion. I like the fuzziness that '30's film stock had. (in fact, I wonder when the
change in film stock was made, shifting to the sharper '40's look?)
I'm not fussed about a little hiss on the soundtrack, as long as it does not overpower the dialogue and music, but I'm sure it won't in this case or you would have warned us in your excellent and very informative announcement. I guess I'm like George Harrison -- I like hearing a little bit of hiss. It means someone didn't go overboard with the Noise-reduction, which can give an airless sort of atmosphere to a soundtrack or recording of any kind. I'm in the process of moving, so just as soon as I get settled I'll get it. I look forward to a long winters-night viewing with a nice bottle of Pimm's close by. |

Is the date of shipment changed, or is it still going out in a few days?

Still basically on schedule. I have about 2 days of finishing touches to put on, including a few decisions to make about lines that are partially missing and
some adjustments to contrast, but after that it's compress and burn, which will probably take about 3 days, and it's outa here. I'm not going to
post a specific beginning shipping date so as not to put Prince Barin under pressure. When he receives the DVDs he will begin shipping them out in the order
which he received orders for them.

OK well I am about done now -- I took the time to A) replace a few partial lines from Chapters 13 and 15 that were missing from the available material (due to
damage and splices), which I couldn't resist making sure would be in place, and B) back the entire project up in case of emergency, which took a while.
I have also added a still gallery with Republic-release-related material to the project. One of the partially-missing lines was Sammy's and let's hear it for new voice-filtering technology which allows an adult's voice to be transformed into the register of a kid. Prince Barin will have everything by the beginning of next week. |

Doc,
I would not ship Pa's order until you make sure his check is not signed by Smiley Burnette ! |

Actually he sent the payment using PayPa.com, which, oddly enough, includes an "Automatic Interest Fee Charge At Gunpoint Upon Delivery" feature as
yet unprecedented in online payment services. He says this fee is called interest because he is interested in getting the DVD and interested in getting paid
twice as much as it cost to watch it as well. You can accuse Pa of a lot of things (and so can the FBI) but you can never charge him with having a low sense of
self-esteem.

I am revealing a secret here for all of you. Doc's next project is to re-edit DICK TRACY RETURNS into the much better GREAT ADVENTURES OF PA STARK, where
lovable ol' Pa and the boys crusade against government corruption, led by the evil Dick Tracy. You will see how Tracy tries to frame the kind and sweet
Stark clan for his own crimes. The government is so grateful for Pa's work, they put my picture on the $100 bill.
