I'm planning to buy a Republic serial since I've never seen one. Which one is the best? Any recommendations?

This subject has been discussed here before, and I believe the general consensus was that if you get ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION, or SPY SMASHER, or ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL, you can't go wrong.

If I had to pick *just* one...Adventures of Captain Marvel. But...others that have been mentioned are very good too. |

For me it is Spy Smasher edging out Adventures of Captain Marvel in a photo finish.

Without hesitation Daredevils of the Red Circle is the most entertaining serial ever made.

...for somebody who has never seen a Republic serial before? Well, ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL is definitely the way to go. Although....
What are your tastes in movies, Mr. Slotte? If you like old horror flicks, you might prefer MYSTERIOUS DOCTOR SATAN. If sci-fi is your bag, maybe UNDERSEA KINGDOM. If you like Westerns, I would definitely recommend ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION. And you if go for psychotronic "so bad they're good" flicks, try KING OF THE ROCKETMEN. |

The official word on Haunted Harbor will soon be available as Laughing Gravy recently reported that he has started watching it. My copy too is in the closet unviewed to date and I only only L.G.'s forthcoming review to know what to look for. (It's a Republic, so, hopefully, he won't be reporting any "funny crooks.")
Seriously, this is the first time I have seen haunted harbor picked as a favorite. It holds promise for me since I like your other choices. |

Not on my Top 5, for sure -- but probably on my Top 10. Kane Richmond, Kay Aldridge, Roy Barcroft, George J. Lewis, it just goes on and on --in addition, plenty of on-location filming and room-destryoing fights. A cheesey monster, sure, but it's only suppose to frighten the "natives" right? I can't imagine how anyone would have this and not rush to watch it.

Since I saw most of the Republic serials in the theater as a young boy, I will rate my top 5 from the list from 1938 to 1945. In chronological order, my best 5 are 1938 Lone Ranger 1939 Zorro's Fighting Legion (Maybe the best) 1940 Drums of Fu Manchu (best screenplay for a serial) 1941 Captain Marvel (best effect) and 1942 Spy Smasher (best overall cast). Honorable Mention 1943 Maaked Marvel (best action serial for a 9 or 10 year old) By the way any serial directed by Witney & English was great. Most of the serials directed by Spencer Bennet were just a hair below W &E in style.

Well, Fartsy, our serial watching is restricted by the fact that we watch one episode of one serial on Friday nights, and therefore there's lots of competition for the prime spot. In addition, lesser serials that don't make the cut are watched at off-hours (late night, weekends, whatever). We make sure to see non-Republics from time to time, although their video quality (and often production quality) usually lags. Anyway, it helps us get a perspective of the entire history of sound serials, not just the Republics.
Here's what we've seen since 1993, when I first picked up HAUNTED HARBOR: 1993-94 CAPTAIN AMERICA, MANHUNT OF MYSTERY ISLAND, ATOM MAN VS. SUPERMAN (MYSTERY was excellent, AMERICA was worth seeing for Atwill, and, well, we had to see ATOM MAN sooner or later.) 1994-95 The FLASH GORDON trilogy (by popular demand of our film group). 1995-96 KING OF THE TEXAS RANGERS, DAREDEVILS OF THE RED CIRCLE, CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT (Clearly, RANGERS and DAREDEVILS are two of the top serials ever made; MIDNIGHT was fun and we spent 15 weeks sending secret messages to one another.) 1996-97 FEDERAL OPERATOR 99, BUCK ROGERS, TERRY & THE PIRATES (BUCK and TERRY were fun, the latter in the "so bad it's good" category; FED-OP was a bore.) 1997-98 JUNGLE GIRL, WINNERS OF THE WEST, THE SHADOW (Well, JUNGLE GIRL is answer to the question "Did Witney and English ever make a bad serial?" WINNERS is the worst we've ever seen, but the year was redeemed by THE SHADOW, one of the top serials ever with a great villain.) 1998-99 THE SPIDER'S WEB, JUNIOR G-MEN, GREEN ARCHER (A whole year of non-Republics! G-MEN was a lot of fun, augmented by Dead End Kid and Bowery Boys pictures, SPIDER was disappointing (neither as exciting as the best Republics nor as entertaining as the best Columbias -- love Blinky tho! -- and ARCHER was dreadful.) 1999-00 ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION and FLASH GORDON (DVD) -- Two terrific serials to introduce my new West Coast family to the genre. Coming next year, subject to additional DVD availability, we'll see TRIP TO MARS and perhaps CAPTAIN MARVEL and DR. SATAN. My recent "off-hours" serials have included RADAR PATROL VS. SPY KING, THE GALLOPING GHOST (both very entertaining), HOLT OF THE SECRET SERVICE (which turned out to be good enough that it should've gotten a prime Friday night spot) and another (my third) attempt to get through RETURN OF CHANDU (I didn't make it this time, either). |

What does everybody find thats so bad about Jungle Girl ( I mean a good reason, beyond bad haircuts ). Check out a REALLY bad jungle serial, like Queen Of The Jungle.

Re: Best Republic serial | #17 | ||

Well, clearly JUNGLE GIRL isn't as awful as, say, THE LOST CITY, but it's pretty much a misfire all around (except for the lovely Ms. Gifford and some great stuntwork). The main complaint, "caucasian natives" aside, is that the entire plot is shoehorned into chapter one, meaning chapters 2-15 are an endless search for/tussle over the missing diamonds. Republic did great action serials (SECRET SERVICE IN DARKEST AFRICA) and plot serials (CAPTAIN MARVEL); this one doesn't seem to know which type it wanted to be. PERILS OF NYOKA is much, much better.

Bonga posted a very well thought out piece awhile ago concerning an imternal poll of the top 10 serial poll regardless of studios. Republic dominated and it differed greatly from the poll that was on the board for quite some time. For newer members here is a list of the top 10 Republic serials from squadron members based on Bonga's research.
Spy Smasher Zorro's Fighting Legion Daredevils of the Red Circle Drums of Fu Manchu Adv. of Captain of Marvel Perils of Nyoka Mysterious Dr Satan The Lone Ranger Zorro Rides Again Secret Service in Deepest Africa |

And judging by this list, I can only guess that few Squadronnaires have seen KING OF THE TEXAS RANGERS, which is better than all but a few of the Republics on the list....

KOTR may give the Perils of Nyoka and the Secret Service in Darkest Africa a go, but none of the rest on the list.
